POPSUGAR Must Have Box May 2013

Time for another POPSUGAR Must Have box and I like this box much better than last month. There is a bunch of interesting things in this box. So let’s get started. As always if you are interested in getting your own subscription and want to help me out, click here.

Must Have Fashion:

The first must have fashion item in the box is the Koorigal Giselle mid brim hat in charcoal. The brim has wire in it which makes it easy to fold the hat up and stash in your beach bag. Another neat feature is there is a draw string in the hat to tighten it. I’m not a hat wearer but I think this is really cute.

The next item is a $30 gift card to the website Charm & Chain. The website reminds me of a more expensive Baublebar.com. It is nice that I can pick out my own jewelry but I’m having a hard time choosing. If you sign up for their emails you can get a 10% discount if you are interested in the site.

There is also a bonus little tote bag. It feels like those freebie promotional bag. Not quite sure what I’m going to do with it yet. Guess I can use it as a library bag.

Must Have Food:

The first must have food item is the Modern Margarita set from The Modern Cocktail. This comes with 5 different flavors such as watermelon, blood orange, mango. These come without alcohol so these can also be great mocktails. I haven’t tried them yet but I excited to at my next girl’s night out.

The next item is Sweet Chili tortilla chips from Way Better Snacks. I haven’t tried these yet as I’m not a fan of spicy things. These are supposed to be healthy chips with ingredients such as flaxseed and quinoa.

Must Have Entertainment:

The entertainment item is a deck of conversation cards based off of Mindy Kaling’s book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? called Questions I Ask Myself When I Want Talk About Myself. I read the book the cards are based off of and I really liked it. I would say it is a must read if you are a fan of “The Office”. Since I already read the book I haven’t opened this up yet because I think I might give these away.

Must Have Beauty:

The first beauty item is the Beautyblender and the Blender-cleanser. I am already a beautyblender user so it was nice to get a replacement. This is the perfect product to blend in my under eye concealer. It is suppose to be used damp but since I do my makeup in my room I tend to use this dry and I think it works well either way. I also like the cleanser. It smells nice and it does a good job of cleaning my blender and my makeup brushes.

The next item is the Pacifica Natural Color Quench lip tint in Sugared Fig. This has a very strong plastic-y fruit punch smell to it, it fades quickly but it is really overwhelming at first. It goes on smoothly but as a slight waxy feel to it. It adds a slight color to my lips. This is an okay product, it works but I wouldn’t seek out more.

So that’s everything in my box. Can’t wait for next month’s box.

First Impressions: Birchbox May 2013

The theme for this month’s box is Beauty Diaries. Personally, I think they made the theme generic so they can give out things that have been sampled before. Three of the things that were in my box, I’ve seen before in other people’s unboxing videos and posts. Saying that, I really liked this box. Two of the samples that I got I’ve really wanted to try and thought about buying just to get them. Also I think the info card this month was cute. Love the Mad Lib diary format. So enough chit chat and let’s get into the box.

As always if you are interested in the box and want to help me out, click here.

The first thing in the box was the Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle spray. This is supposed to lock in color, add shine, and detangle. I can’t speak about the first two things but it does detangle. This spray made it so much easier to comb through my curly hair that likes to knot up. This also smells really good, kinda sweet, and the scent lasts a long time. Not sure if I would buy the full size but I will definitely use up this sample.

Full size, $21.95

The next item is the Isaac Mizrahi FABULOUS Isaac Mizrahi Eau de Parfum. Sigh. Another perfume sample. This perfume has a blend of mandarin, jasmine, and vanilla. I didn’t smell the mandarin at all but I do get the jasmine and vanilla as I think it smells like a sweet floral scent. I didn’t get the initial perfume headache so I thought this might be something I could wear. But no. After about an hour of wearing I found the scent overwhelming and I got my headache. And lucky me this is pretty long lasting perfume. So in the give away bag it goes.

Full size, $20-69

The next item is the Supergoop! Daily Correct SPF 35 CC Cream. This evens out your skin tone and protects against UVA, UVB, and infrared-A rays. I don’t know what infrared-A rays are so I guess it’s a good thing this protects against them. This only comes in two shades, light/medium and medium/dark so I thought this probably wouldn’t work for me but this blends out perfectly. While this does even out my skin tone I still needed to wear a foundation with this. My favorite thing about this product is that there is no sunscreen smell!!! Yay! I liked it so much that I already purchased the full size. I think this would be great for days I don’t want to wear a full face of makeup and also for traveling. The only thing I don’t like about this is I wish it was cheaper.

Full size, $32

The next product is Whish Shave Crave shaving cream. This is a foam-free shaving cream that contains organic shea butter to keep your legs moisturized. I really wanted to try this product, probably because of the blueberry scent, so I was thrilled to get this in my box. I’m glad I resisted buying the full size because I think this is only so-so. I like a thick shave cream so I can see where I have already shaved. This is a thin cream, probably because it is foam-free, so it was hard to tell what I have already shaved and didn’t. I have sensitive skin and shaving is super irritating to my legs in case you were wondering why I have to be careful not to reshave in the same place. I did like the scent and it does a decent job of moisturizing but I feel I could get the same effect with using a hair conditioner for a lot less money. I’ll use up the sample but most likely won’t purchase the full size.

Full size, $20

The last two products in my box, yep I got six products this month!, are both from Amika. The first is the Obliphica Nourishing Mask and the second is the Obliphica Hair Treatment. The nourishing mask works the same as the Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque, which is an extra rich conditioner that helps to repair damaged and dry hair. The Hair treatment is fragrant hair oil. I’m sorry to say that I haven’t tried these out yet. I keep forgetting to take them out the box and I think the foil package of hair just seems like it would be really messy.

Obliphica Nourishing Mask: Full size, $12-40
Obliphica Hair Treatment: Full size, $34

So I think this is probably my best Birchbox to date. I got things I wanted to try and found a new favorite. Can’t beat that. So if you want to see how I filled out my beauty diary, here is what I put.

Nail of the Day: Simple Art Deco

So I saw The Great Gatsby movie the other weekend and ever since then I’ve been obsessed with Art Deco. No matter if you like the book or not, I would see it for the gorgeous makeup! I guess that is a sign that you might have a problem with makeup when you spend 2.5 hours in a movie admiring the makeup and not Leo. Though have no fear I noticed that he looked great in this movie too. đŸ˜‰

I saw a lot of great Art Deco nail looks but I wanted something simple that I could do on both hands myself. I started with 2 coats of Alice. I then painted a stripe of Zelda going one way across the tip and then did the same with Millie going in the opposite direction. I really like how this turned out, minus that my hands are a mess. Zelda and Millie applied perfectly and I can’t wait to use them again. Zelda is such an awesome color. I’m not usually a fan of foil polishes but this one is great. I love how it picks up the other colors on the nail. Alice applied okay, not great but I’ve applied worse.

Also, sorry the pictures are blurry. I think the shininess of Zelda was throwing off my camera.

Here are the swatches of the polishes that I used.

Hope you enjoy this look!

First Impression: Ipsy May 2013 bag

Time for another Ipsy bag review. Ipsy did things a little differently this month. Instead of everyone getting the same bag with only color variations, they had a bunch of different variations and items this month. Every bag got a Zoya polish from the recent Spring collection, Yaby concealer, and a Mirabella lipstick or Juice Beauty lipgloss. The other 2 items where surprises from about 8 different products.

If you are interested in Ipsy and want to help me out by using my referral link, click here.

I’m not too impressed with my bag. The concealer is way too dark for me, I have sensitivity to most perfume and the hair serum is not the type of product I like for my hair.

So enough with my complaining and let me show what I got in my bag.

First off I think this chevron bag is really cute. I’m really liking all the printed bag Ipsy has been sending out. And this bag matches my sunglasses case I got from the dollar store and now I can having matching bags in my purse.

The first item in the bag is the Zoya polish in Blu from the Lovely Spring 2013 collection. I really like Zoya and most of my polish collection is Zoya. And if you are looking for a good white nail polish, Zoya Purity is amazing!

Blu is whitish blue cream polish. It applied kinda streaky on the swatch card. I don’t know if I didn’t wait long enough before applying the second coat but the other polishes I was swatching at the same time didn’t give me the same problem. I think this pretty but I really wanted the yellow or the green polish from this collection.

Cost: $8

The next item is the Yaby concealer in Honey. This way too dark for my fair skin. I tried this as an under eye concealer and it was really dark and yellow. It worked okay but since I have such bad under eye circles I like something that brightens that area, not just conceal it. It applied smoothly and didn’t settle into lines, so that’s a plus. If Yaby’s website wasn’t such a mess I would be willing to try the concealer in another shade.

Cost: $4.85

The next item is the Mirabella lip sheer lipstick in Daydream. It has mango butter to moisturize your lips and helps it apply smoothly. Daydream is a pretty mauve shade leans on the purple side. Since I have been obsessed with purple lipsticks I was happy to add this to my collection. This is a sheer lipstick that works for the day and would be a good layering lipstick. I really like this product. It is sheer like a lipgloss but has the moisturizing and smooth application of a lipstick. This kinda reminds me of my favorite lip product, Maybelline Baby lips or the Revlon lip butters.

Cost: $22

The next item is the Pacifica Island Vanilla perfume roll-on. Pacifica’s website says, “inspired by the unique magic of Tahitian vanilla, this sensual blend sets sweet and sultry vanilla absolute, with honey-jasmine notes and a touch of fruitiness, against a deep and beautiful base of tea.” If you read my blog before you will know that I was really disappointed to see this was in my bag. Thankfully I didn’t get a headache from this and was able to wear this the whole day. It was good that it didn’t make me sick since this is long lasting and I was still smelling it on my wrists hours later. It is a nice smell, reminds me of vanilla extract. While I like the scent I think this would work better as a fall/winter perfume instead of a spring/summer perfume.

On a side note, I love Pacifica’s packaging. I think it is so pretty!

Cost: $12

The last item in my bag is the NuMe Finishing Serum. This a thick syrupy serum that reminds me of the John Freida serum. This is not a hair product I like for my hair. I think it’s too heavy and if you add too much your hair is greasy. This did nothing for my hair. While it was really humid on the day I tried it and most products don’t work in this weather, my hair was not only frizzy but some parts were not curled at all! That was really weird since I have Shirley Temple type curls and the only way I have straight hair if if I physically straighten it. This will be put in the give away box.

Full Size price is $29 for 2 oz.

So that was my box. I’m glad I got the lipstick because everything else I was indifferent about.

Julep Hooray For May mystery box

It’s time for another mystery box from Julep! So Julep suckered me in for another mystery box and this has to be the most disappointing to date. While I was really excited to get only polishes, out of the 6 polishes 4 were ones I already owned. Very disappointing! I guess I reached the point where I have a large collection of Julep polishes. Enough with my gloom and doom and on to the box.

Here is everything I got in my box, which is version 2.

The item in the drawstring bag is a gift to give to a friend. Cute idea and since I owned it already I can happily give it away.

And here is what’s in the bag.

I was surprised that the give away polish was Alice from May’s Maven boxes.

The next 3 polishes are ones I already own.

I was happy to get another Avery. I was originally going to give my first Avery away to my cousin because that’s her name but I really liked the polish. I was going to buy her one so it is nice that Julep saved me a step. And it is perfect timing because she is having a dance recital soon so I can give her a little present.

Sharon is pretty red, kinda reminds of a red car. Not sports car red, normal car red.

Grace is a really pale pink. This is three coats on the swatch plate and it still doesn’t look like I put anything on it. This is not a color I needed in duplicate.

The next two are new to my collection.

Vanessa is a clear polish with tiny holographic glitter. Normally i would be over the moon for his polish but after getting Paris last month this kind of a let down. Paris, you are too darn awesome.

The last color in the box is one of the new polishes that Julep guaranteed in every box. Charlie is a taxi car yellow.

Charlie reminded me of Abby from the Maven box in April but side by side there is a slight difference. Abby is definitely a neon color and has that bright neon sheerness to it.

So that’s my mystery box. As I said before, I am disappointed that I only got 2 new colors from this box. Not Julep’s fault, but I think I’ll be taking a break from the mystery boxes for a bit as I obviously have too many polishes.

First Impressions: Beautybar.com Sample Society May 2013

This is my second Sample Society box and again I was disappointed. Except for one thing I didn’t like any of the products.

So here’s what I got in this box.

The first product is the Jane Iredale Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip & Cheek stain. This is a self-adjusting product that gives you the product color. It goes on clear and darkens to a berry pink in about 5 minutes. It has a nice fruit punch scent and goes on smoothly. It is a little too glossy, in my opinion,to be used as a cheek stain but is perfect for the lips. Might just be me but I don’t need or want glossy cheeks. I tried this first on my hands and this does stain so it would be a good cheek stain.

Full size is $25.

The next product is the Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream. I have gotten this sample many times before and you probably have too if you ordered from any website that sells beauty products. This has a very strong medicinal scent. It does fade after awhile but I don’t think this is that great of a lotion to put up with scent. A plus is that it does absorb quickly and don’t have greasy hands after using it.

Full size is $16 for 1.25 oz or $25 for 2.5 oz.

The next product is the Dr. Brandt Flexitone BB Cream with an SPF of 30. This product hydrates, evens tone and is a sunscreen. I had many problems with this product. The first problem is that this is way too dark for my fair skin. There is only one shade but it supposed to self adjust to match your skin tone. C’mon Dr. Brandt people do you honestly believe that a shade that dark would lighten itself for anyone lighter than medium skin tone? Okay sorry I stepping off my soap box now. đŸ˜€ I do have to say that if I faux tanned this would be a great product to use to have a tan face. This blended out to a really pretty tan color on my hand. The second problem I have with this is that it has that strong sunscreen scent. Unfortunately, sunscreen smell gives me a headache and makes me nauseous. So even if it was in a shade that matched my skin tone I still couldn’t use it because of the scent.

Full size is $39 for 1 oz.

The next product is the Alterna Bamboo Shine Luminous Shine Mist. This is a product that is supposed to give your hair a glossy finish. Curly hair isn’t shiny because of the curls so I probably wasn’t a good person to try this out. I didn’t think my hair looked any different after using it. Also this has a strong hair spray smell and I found it slightly suffocating. This definitely going in my give away box.

Full size is $24 for 4 oz.

The last product is the Kate Somerville Somerville360 Tanning Towelettes. I have to confess that faux tanning frightens me. It seems like too many things could go wrong and then you’re stuck looking orange or streaky until it fades. So I haven’t tried this out yet. I guess the one wipe is good for the whole body but I don’t know. Maybe one day I will brave up and try it out on my legs. I am usually in pants so if it goes horribly wrong at least they will be hidden.

Full size is $48 for 8 towelettes.

So after 2 months of being underwhelmed with the samples I canceled my subscription. I just think for $5 cheaper, Birchbox has better samples and a much better reward system. Maybe one day I’ll return but for now we need to part ways. It’s not you, it’s me.
