POPSUGAR Must Have Box July 2013

Time for another POPSUGAR Must Have Box. After two awesome months this box was a little bit of a let down. So let me show what I got in my box.

The box items.

MUST HAVE FASHION: Baublebar Rose Gold Double Curb Chain necklace

This is a heavy necklace! I wasn’t sure about the necklace, I’m not really one for statement pieces, but I got a bunch of compliments when I wore it to work. So I guess this is a keeper.

MUST HAVE BEAUTY: Supergoop! SPF 30 Anti-Aging City Sunscreen Serum

This seems like a neat idea, give your skin anti-aging benefits and protect it from the sun in one product. Only problem, at least for me, is that this is a chemical sunscreen. So I won’t be able to wear this.

MUST HAVE FOOD: Mighty Leaf Iced Tea in Calypso Mango

I’m not a tea drinker. I know, I’m a bad southerner. My Mom loves tea but she hates mango so she didn’t want to try this. I ended up giving it away to my aunt.

MUST HAVE HOME: Tovolo King Cube Ice Tray

These are neat. It is an ice tray that makes two inch cubes, which melt slower than regular sized ice cubes. So you get a cold drink that isn’t watered down. I’m saving this for my brother. He is planning on buying a house soon so this would be a good house warming gift.

This is a smoky lavender nail polish. This is a little streaky and required three coats on the swatch to fully cover.

MUST HAVE FOOD: Hannahmax Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip All Natural Crunchy Cookie Chips

The name of this is ridiculously long but this was my favorite thing in the box. When I first saw them I was kinda disappointed because I’m not a fan of chocolate, especially dark chocolate. I decided to give them a try anyway. These were so good! Light and crispy, they tasted like freshly baked cookies. I would love more but these are $6 a bag. As amazing as these are that just seems crazy to spend of a bag of cookie chips.

So that is my box for the month. Next month is their anniversary so I cant wait to see what kinda goodies will be in that box. If you got this box what was your favorite item?

Book and Beauty: “Code Name Verity” and

Time for another Book and Beauty. I really loved this book, Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein so I had to have another Book and Beauty to share it with everyone.

The Book:. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

Plot: This book is set in WWII England and is a story of a friendship between two women. One is a pilot and the other is an officer. When the book opens up one of the women has been captured by the Nazis and is being kept alive to write everything she knows about the British war plan. To find out more about this book click here.

Why I loved it: This book is just amazing! I was thinking one night that I was happy that I was about to go to bed so I could read the book and spend more time with these characters. Then I was sad because I had finished the book the day before. This book is so good, and has the awards to prove it, and it is nice to read about strong women that don’t need a man to save them. Also it was fascinating to find out what role women had in WWII.

Read if you like: Another favorite of mine is another book set in WWII, The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. You can’t go wrong with a book that is narrated by Death. Click here for information.

Where I got the book: I checked this book out from my public library, which is why the book is so shiny as it has the protective cover on the book.

The Beauty:

Here is my nail look. I used SinfulShine with Gel Tech in Come Hither as the base color on all nails and on the accent nail I used Essie in Shake Your $$ Maker as the leaves. I didn’t realize that this color was so sheer which is why I have these ugly brown leaves. That will teach me to use a color I haven’t swatches before in nail art. I then used my pink and green stripers to accent the colors.

This is my first time using a SinfulShine with Gel Tech nail polish (got it free in my Influenster VoxBox) and I am impressed. For $3.99 this polish covered and lasted just as well as my more expensive nail polish. I was so impressed I went to Walgreens, where they are exclusively right now, and picked up two more colors.

So that is another segment of Book and Beauty. If you have read this book let me know what you think.

Save or Splurge: hair tie edition

After receiving the Good Ouchless ribbon elastics in my Influenster VoxBox I thought it might be interesting to do a comparison between these and the more expensive Twistband hair ties.

So welcome to the category Save or Splurge. Yes, I got the idea from Glamour magazine.

The contenders:

Twistband hair ties

Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics

First up is Twistband hair ties. These retail, according to their website theTwistband, for $6 for 3. Making them $2 a hair tie.

Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics retail for $3.99, I saw them $3.97 on Walmart’s website, for 5 hair ties which makes them about $0.80 a hair.

Winner: Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics. Definitely cheaper and more than half the price of the Twistband.

Twistband has hair ties in just about any color and pattern you could want. Seriously, their website can be dangerous. They even have a subscription box available.

Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics has only this 5 pack so far. At least this all that I could find. Target.com had a four pack but it was geared towards kids so I don’t know if it is the same product as this.

Winner: Twistband.

How Does It Work:

Before I get to the comparison I should say that I wear my hair in a pony tail or a bun almost everyday and that is what I use my hair ties for.

Twistband is really stretchy and is probably the reason people with thick hair don’t think these work. They also stretched out pretty quickly. Not as quickly or as drastically as a regular pony tail holder, but it does happen.

Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics are not as stretchy and feel more firm. Also I wore the same hair ties everyday for a week and looks almost the same as the ones I haven’t used.

Winner: Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics. Since it is not as stretchy it seems to hold my hair better than the Twistband hair ties.

Overall Winner Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics! It would probably win for the price alone but the fact that these work better make them the winner, hands down!

Here is a silly video I made on Vine.

Have you tried the Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics? If you have, what do you think?

Note: I received the Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics for free from Influenster in exchange for an honest review. While I did get these free, my opinion is truly honest and unbiased.

Influenster Sunkissed VoxBox

In case you have never hear of Influesnter, it is a site similar to BzzAgent in that the site gives you products, if you qualify, for free to try in exchange for a review and exposure on social media. I was lucky enough to be selected for the Sunkissed VoxBox. If you are interested in Influenster I have five email invites I can send out so the first five people toemail me will get an email request from me.

Due to the nature of the Influenster program I will have individual reviews in separate posts on the items instead of a general first impressions review.

So here are the products in the box.

And here is the product card with more information.

The first item in the box is the Dr. Scholls for Her high heel insoles. I don’t actually own any high heels as I am on my feet a lot at work to justify wearing heels. Plus flats are just way too comfortable to wear heels. I will see how they work in flats I guess.

Price: $10.99

The next item is the Olay Fresh Effects BB cream Skin Perfecting Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 in the shade fair/light. This comes in two shades, the one I got and also in light/medium. This has chemical sunscreen in it and while the sunscreen smell isn’t too strong it still smells like sunscreen. Yuck! The one nice thing is that this is light enough for my fair skin. Too bad about the chemical sunscreen in it.

Price: $12.99

The next item is the SinfulShine with Gel Tech nail polish in the shade Come Hither. This comes in 32 different shades is for a limited time exclusively at Walgreens. While I’m not thrilled with the color, it did swatch very nicely and was opaque easily with two coats. This is also has great shine without even applying a top coat.

Price: $2.99

The last item in the box is the Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics. These are just like the Twistband hair ties but much cheaper. Probably my favorite thing in the box.

Price: $3.99-$4.99

So that is my box. Look for more detailed reviews of these products coming soon.

Note: I received these products complimentary for testing purposes from Influenster.

First Impressions: Starlooks Starbox June 2013

So this will be my last Starlooks Starbox. I was going to get the July box, was charged for the July box, but decided that July would be my last month. I just have been blah about this subscription box, with nothing really becoming my favorite. When I sent the email to cancel the subscription I was refunded my money and cancelled for that month. Call me impressed. So if anyone was on the fence about trying the box keep that in mind. Even though I have been indifferent about the box, the customer service is amazing.

So my last box is probably my favorite with this being a box I would use everything I got in it. So enough chit chat. Let me show what I got.

First off this is their anniversary box and for an anniversary box it is kind of lackluster. When I hear anniversary box I expect something big and exciting. While I like the things in the box there is nothing exciting about the items.

So the first item is the eyeliner in white. If you have read my blog before you know I’m not a fan of pencil liners that need to be sharpened but this was really nice. It went on smoothly and lasted the whole day. I forgot how good it looks to have white liner on the waterline. It makes my eyes look so big.

Price: $12

The next item is another eyeliner. Does any box, especially a box with 3 items need two eye liners? Personally, I would say no but I digress. This is a liquid liner, called the Precision Liner Definer Pen, which is a felt tip marker style in the color black. This was nice. Just like the pencil liner, went on smooth and lasted the whole day. I love liquid liner the best out of all liners, especially if it is in the felt tip marker style. I just wish this was in a different color as this is the second black liner, in fact the second black liner in the marker style, I’ve gotten in my subscription boxes this month. Dear Subscription curator gods, you might not know this but there are more than one color for eye liners.

Price: $16

The last item in the box is a bronzer in Montego Bay. Being really pale there are very few bronzers that work for me but this one does. When I first swatched this product it was shimmery. So I was afraid that it would look bad on, I had a vision of disco ball cheeks, but it looks pretty natural. This was such a pretty color that I used it as an eye color as well as a bronzer. I think I might only use this as an eye color since I’m bad about contouring.

Price: $19

And here I am wearing everything from the box. I am also wearing Tarte blush in Tipsy and pretty sure nothing on my lips.

And here are close up of my eye looks. I used Montego Bay bronzer on the lid, Brazen eyeshadow in Type A in the crease (from a beautybox5 box), precision eye liner in black as the liner. The white liner was used as the brow highlight, in the inner corner and on the water line. The lid color looks patchy in the photo but it wasn’t like that in real life. I guess the shimmer reflecting the light makes it look like nothing is on my lid in certain spots.

So that is my last box. One nice thing about their site is if the have boxes left over for the month you can buy them for $25. So I can always pick up future boxes if I see anything that catches my eye.

Julep Maven July 2013

The theme from Julep this month is “The California Coast”. Since I’ve never been on the California coast I’ll have to take their word for it. Overall I think this is a weird collection. Don’t get me wrong, I think all the polishes are beautiful but more suited for a fall box, since most of the colors are dark, than a summer box. I went with the It Girl box this month, it has a yellow polish and there are not many yellow polishes that I can pass up. So let’s get into the box.

As always If you are interesting in Julep Maven and want to help me out by using my referral code click here.

The first thing in the box is the beauty extra, which is Green Tea blotting sheets. These worked really well and have a nice green tea floral scent.

The first polish is Angela. This is a dark gray polish with a teal and dark blue duochrome. This needed at least two coats before you can even see the teal and dark blue color.

This picture shows the duochrome in the polish.

The next polish is Tracy. This is a sea salt texture polish and it has dark blue, light blue and silver glitter or what ever sea salt polishes are made of. Not sure I understand the concept of these texture polishes but this one is gorgeous, especially in the sunlight.

It was so pretty that I had to put it on. Went on easily and was completely opaque after two coats.

The next polish is Nadia. This is a butter yellow with a slight shimmer. Really pretty and a good yellow for people afraid of wearing yellow.

Of course I couldn’t just get my box. Here are my add-ons.

My first add-on is Blakely. The is a dark purple and green duochrome.

A close up of the bottle.

The next polish is Adele. This is a peach shimmer top coat. Really pretty!

And here is Adele over Nadia.

And my last polish is Fireworks. The perfect polish for celebrating Independence Day with red, blue and silver glitter.

And here is the look I wear for the 4th. I also used Julep Sharon (the red polish), Julep Char (the blue polish), and Zoya Purity (the white polish) with Fireworks layered on top.

So that’s what I got this month. Thanks for reading! đŸ™‚

First Impression: beautybox 5 June 2013

Another month and another beautybox5 box. Can’t say this one impressed me any more than the others. So let’s just get into it and show you what I got.

As always if you are interested in the box and want to help me out, click here.

The first item are the Coolway Cool Cleanse shampoo and the Coolway Cool Hydrate conditioner. The shampoo was nice. According to the card, the shampoo is suppose to reduce breakage and frizz. Haven’t used it long enough to find out if the claims are true. It is very low foam and I felt it got my hair clean without stripping it of all it’s moisture. Having curly hair is important that it stays as moisturized as possible or it will just be a big frizz ball. The conditioner was just okay. This is supposed to hydrate to give you enhanced smoothness, body and shine. Yeah, it did nothing for my hair, and certainly not the things they claim. This just wasn’t moisturizing enough for me. I did like how they smelled, kinda minty.

Full size: Each product is $25 for 8.6 oz.

The next item is the Aveeno Hydrate + Protect lotion suncreen with SPF 30. Basically this is a moisturizer with sunscreen in it. This is a chemical sunscreen so it has the yucky sunscreen smell that makes me sick. It is moisturizing but it also felt heavy on my skin. I feel bad giving a first impression review on things with chemical sunscreen in it because I hate how they feel on my skin, heavy and oppressive. So I will always hate products like this and this one didn’t change my mind.

Full price: $9.99, 3 oz.

The next product is Just Being Sexy body bronzer. Like I’m said before, I have no plans of tanning, real or faux. These will be given away.

Full price: $49, 6 oz. (Yikes on that price! Since I don’t faux tan I don’t know how much they usually cost but this just seems really expensive.)

The last item in the box was the Brazen mineral eyeshadow in Head Over Heels. This is a matte lavender shadow with lavender sparkle. This is really pretty and I always like a purple eyeshadow. This applied very easily and blended well. Out of all the repeat brands that we get in the box Brazen eyeshadows are always nice to get.

Full price: $7.99, 0.18 oz.

Here is a look that I did with all the Brazen shadows I have gotten from beautybox5. Head Over Heels is on the lid, Type A in the outer v and a little into the crease and Birthday Suit in the crease to blend out the look. I finished the look with the Cailyn purple gel liner.

So that’s the box. I liked one thing in the box so that’s better than the last two months! Yay I guess. Figured crossed for next month.
