Where I’ve Been

Hi all! I am coming out of hiding to post a quick update on where I’ve been. And the answer is work. Seriously! As readers of this blog know I work at the library and the library partnered up with the recreation department in the county to preform story times at the county park. So every weekend in the month of December I was at the park performing a live action How the Grinch Stole Christmas. it was miserable outside. Super cold and every weekend it was rainy and windy. The whole week would be crystal clear skies and Friday would roll around and the weather was horrible. Needless to say my skin and health has taken a beating. I’ve been breaking out and generally having dull skin. I broke out my trusty Clarisonic and that has helped.

I don’t want to be a complain post but I also wanted to show you my makeup for the storytime. Since we were performing the Grinch we all dressed as Whos. I did simple makeup with crazy hair and used false lashes. It was the first time using false lashes and they went on surprisingly well. Kinda. They were not in the same place on my eyes but I think I was the only one that noticed. The lashes that I used were the Ardell 106. I got them at Ulta. I threw them away before I could take a picture. It seems that you can only wear them twice before you have to throw them out. If you can get more uses out your false lashes let me know your tips.

Here is a picture of me with my co-stars. The lady who played Grinch did an amazing job on her Grinch makeup and everyone wanted to take pictures with her.

The other thing that kept me busy was of course the holiday season. I had a great Christmas and spent time with family that I don’t see very often. One of the highlights was meeting my two year old cousin for the first time!

I did some holiday baking for my co-workers. These are Oreo balls. They look super scary but tasted really good. Sadly these were make with help. The tray on the left went to the coworkers and the right tray stayed at home.

One of the best gifts I got was from my four year old cousin. His mom took him to the $1 store and had him pick out gifts for the family. My brother got a bald head comb, which is a head band with combs on the side. We had a big laugh at that since my brother has a ton of hair and a full beard. I got a bobble head penguin. His gifts were everyone’s favorites.

So that’s what I have been doing. I hope to get back into blogging and making YouTube videos in January when I won’t be working every weekend! If you still want me to do reviews of the past subscription boxes let me know. I did cancel Ipsy. I was tried of the mediocre bags of stuff I wasn’t using, but I still have Birchbox, Julep, and Popsugar.

I hope you had a great holiday season!

Rimmel London Scadaleyes Retro Glam Mascara Review

Hi everyone! I have come out of hiding to write a quick review of the new Rimmel London Scandaleyes Retro Glam mascara. I got this for free in a recent Influenster VoxBox in exchange for doing some reviews.

This new mascara hit stores last month, November 2013. This mascara is designed to give you clump free lashes for a retro 1960s look.

I forgot to take a picture before I opened it, which is why I have busted up packaging. As you can see from the picture I got this in the color 001 Black. According to their website it comes in two colors, the one I got and Extreme Black. I found the regular black pretty black but if you want darker you have that option.

I have used for about a week and have been liking the mascara so far. With one coat there is a noticeable lengthening of my lashes and it is clump free. The problem comes in when you apply more than one coat. I did find it got a little clumpy, as you will notice with my eye look pictures. I took care of the clumps by brushing through my lashes with a clean spooly brush. Also I found the brush a little too big for my liking. I was getting mascara on my lids when I wasn’t careful about my application. Though I haven’t poked my eye which is a big plus. That is the reason I couldn’t use the Revlon mascaras with those big plastic brushes.

The formula is nice, not too wet and not too dry. Since I have only used it for a week I thinking it will get a little drier. Also my sensitive eyes haven’t had any problems with the formula. I have also found that it lasts all day and doesn’t flake. And it stayed all day with me briefly crying, a local celebrity died and I cry really easily, and putting in eye drops.

So now on to the look. I put about two coats on my lashes. I had a hard time taking pictures the day I wore this look so that is why there are only two awkward eye pictures but you still get the general idea.

Overall I’m really liking this mascara and would buy it again.

Note: I got this mascara free from the Influenster RoseVoxBox in exchange for an honest review. If you are interested in joining Influenster let me know as can invite up to 5 people.

First Impressions: Birchbox October 2013

Yay! Finally doing the last review of my October boxes. I got in all my November boxes this week so I knew I had to get my act together. So here is my box.

The first item is the Avène Cleanance Gel Soapless Cleanser for oily/acne prone skin. I don’t know how they claim to be soapless as this foams up, which is usually because of detergent in the product. Also I do not have oily or acne prone skin so I found this soap a little drying. It does smell nice and fresh and it did a good job taking care of any makeup left on my face after using a makeup wipe.

Full size: $20

The next item is Curly Solutions Curl Keeper. This is a water based hair serum to help curls stay frizz free. When I first used it I didn’t think it was going to work because this felt like I was pouring water into my hand. I am happy to admit I was wrong as my curls looked great every time I use this. My curls are defined and as frizz free as they could be living in the Deep South. I have gotten a bunch of compliments on my hair. I wish I didn’t just buy a big bottle Quidad Climate Control® Heat & Humidity Gel because I would definitely buy a bottle of this.

Full size: $10

The next item is DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer Moisturizer Serum. This serum is designed to minimize pores and soften fine lines. I didn’t notice any difference when I used this and like most serums and wrinkle creams I think I need to use for an extended period before anything happens.

Full size: $85

The next item is theBalm cosmetics Stainiac in Beauty Queen. This is a lip and cheek stain similar to Benefit’s Benetint. I’m not a fan of either product. I find they dry too quickly to spread and then I have streaks where I first put the product.

Full size: $17

The last item is a Birchbox Find, which is Chapstick Hydration Lock in Vanilla Créme. This is nice and reminds me of the medicated Chapstick. When I first started using it I thought it was a little too waxy for me but now it is the perfect balance you would want in a lip balm, not too waxy and not too greasy.

Not the best box but it was saved by the awesome Curl Keeper serum.

First Impressions: beautybox 5 October 2013

So you know how I’ve been liking my beautybox 5 boxes lately. Yeah, not so much this month. Repeat brands or brands that aren’t new to the market was what greeted me this month.

The first item is Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. I have used this lotion for years because it is one of the few drugstore lotion that are perfume and scent free. It is a light lotion and absorbs quickly. I have better lotion that are more moisturizing but I still get this every once in a while. I was not excited to find this in my box, while I like it, I get subscription boxes to find new items.

Full price: $6.99 for 8oz

The next item is Model Co Cheek and Lip Tint. Finally, a Model Co product I like! This blended nicely and looked like a natural flush. It also has a great raspberry scent. I liked it as a cheek tint and not so much as lip tint, but that is more of personal preference than product performance.

Full price: $22 for .03 oz

The next item is Swissco Glitter Toe Separators. What can I say. These are toe separators that are sparkly. As much as I love painting my finger nails I hardly ever paint my toes especially now that colder weather is here. This would have been much better in a box 4 or 5 months ago.

Full price: $2

The next item is La Fresh Travel Lite Facial Cleansing Wipes. Sigh. Honestly, La Fresh has more wipes then I thought possible. These are okay. Since this is a pack of eight the wipes are nicely moisturized and it does a decent job of taking off my foundation. It did not do a good job of taking off my eye makeup. I wear waterproof mascara and liner and it barely touched it.

Full price: $19.99 for 48 wipes

The last item in box is Nubar Alter Ego Nail Lacquer in Blondie. This is a glitter top coat. When I painted the nail wheel I noticed that the polish was a thick gel texture.

Full price: $8 for .5oz

So that’s my box.

The Autumn Tag

I thought I would do something different with this blog and do a tag post. On one of the other blogs I read I saw this Autumn Tag and thought it would be fun to do.

So without further delay.

Question 1. Favorite thing about Autumn

My favorite thing is definitely the weather change. Living in the Deep South it doesn’t cool down until about Ocotber. And when I say cool down I mean that it is no longer 90 + degrees everyday. I still haven’t been able to wear any long sleeves shirts yet but I don’t feel like I will die of heat exhaustion.

Question 2. Favorite Autumn drink

My favorite drink is definitely Starbucks caramel apple cider! It is so rare that I get because it needs to be really cold for me to want to drink it.

Question 3. Favorite scent/candle

I love the apple cider scented candles from Bath and Bodyworks. I love Cider Lane and when the winter candles come out I stock up on ‘Tis the Season. I also liking the Leaves candle. This is the first year I had it and I am really liking it. I can see why it is so popular with the beauty gurus.

Question 4. Favorite Autumn lipstick

Autumn is when I put up my coral lipsticks. Sadly and a little reluctantly at that but I just don’t think I can rock such obvious a Spring/Summer shade. So I turn to berries and reds in Autumn. These are two of my favorites. The one of the left is Covergirl Smoochie in Text Me and the one of the right is Revlon lip butter in Red Velvet.

Question 5. Go to Autumn moisturizer

I don’t change my everyday moisturizer when it gets cooler I just add argan oil. I discovered this last winter when my skin was peeling and I was looking for a heavier moisturizer. I didn’t like how the thicker moisturizers felt so I tried the Josie Maran argan oil along with my normal moisturizer and loved the results. I am currently using this Julep one because it was on sale but I like the Josie Maran one better.

Question 6. Go to Autumn color for eyes

This is the only thing that I really don’t change throughout the year. I love gold eyeshadow and wear it all year long.

Question 7. Favorite Autumn music

Is there specific Autumn music? I don’t have an answer for this one unless to say the music I hear at the different festivals and fairs that happen this time of year. What a weird question! Now I’m wondering if I’m missing out on some specific Autumn music.

Question 8. Favorite Autumn outfit to wear

I don’t have anything I wear in Autumn that I don’t wear in summer or Spring but I do love these green shoes from Crocs. I looked on their website and it looks like these aren’t sold any more. I wear these as much as possible during Autumn and Winter.

Question 9. Favorite Autumn treat

Hmm….I’m going to go super general and say Halloween candy and Thanksgiving dinner. 😉

Question 10. Favorite place to be during Autumn

I love camping durning this time of year. Of course I only do baby camping, I need a cabin or a camper with a working bathroom.

So that is some of my favorite Autumn things. What are some of your favorites? If you do the tag let me know by leaving the link in the comments.

First Impressions: Ipsy October 2013

For some reason it took me awhile to try any of the stuff in my subscription bags from October. I have finally got around using them so there is my First Impressions review of Ipsy.

First up is the bag. Not a huge fan of the bag. I looks just like the bag we got a few months ago but now with a quote.

The first item in my bag is Zoya nail polish in Neve. Out of the three Zoya polishes in the bags this is the one that I wanted. Yay! Zoya is my favorite brand so I’m always happy to get one in my bag.
Neve is a gorgeous navy blue with purple undertones. In some lights it looks blue and in some purple.

The next item is Bella Terra Mineral Cosmetics mineral shimmer in Emotion. This was nice, nothing special mineral eyeshadow. It is a medium purple that works as a lid color or as a crease color.

The next item is Style Sexy Hair Spray Clay. This a hair spray and I don’t have a need for hair spray. If you have curly hair and use hair spray let me know. Maybe I’m missing something but I just don’t see a need for hair spray with curly hair.

The next item is Coastal Scents medium shadow brush BR-C-N02. This was a good brush with a good balance between firmness and softness. It picked up the eyeshadow really well. The only bad thing I would say is that this brush is a little too big for my eyelid so I think I would only use this for my brow highlight.

The last item is the Nourish Organic Deeply Nourishing Coconut & Argan body lotion. This is sold exclusively at Target so if you are interested in this you can find it there. I didn’t find anything special about this lotion. It is a light lotion and absorbs quickly. My hands are always dry, one of the downsides to working in a library, and I like heavy duty lotions. This one doesn’t seem to make much difference after using it. This smell is a little weird, not quite coconut and also a weird floral scent.

So that was my October Ipsy bag.

POPSUGAR Must Have box: September and October 2013 boxes

Hi, reader! Today is your lucky day as you get two for the price of one today. Yep two Popsugar boxes in one post. See how generous I am and my generosity has nothing to do with the fact I forgot to write up a blog post last month on the September box. Nope.

So on to the September box.

The first item is the Barr-Co. Original Scent Reed Diffuser. This was my favorite thing in this box. This a great scent, like a cross between oatmeal cookies and Shea butter. This also does a great job of making the whole house smell great!

The next item is the book P.S. You’re Invited by Erica Domesek. This book shows you a bunch of crafts and embellishments you can do. This is not really my thing but my mom likes to craft so she was the recipient of the book.

The next item is the Rifle Paper Co. Coaster Set. While these have a pretty floral design, these are a thick paper so I don’t think these would last too long.

The next item is Kitsch Headbands. These are the same material as hair ties. Unfortunately headbands that go around the whole head give me a headache and these are no exception. I might give these to my 11 year old cousin or use them when washing my face.

The next item is a $25 gift card to Shoptiques.com. Shoptiques is an online market place for shops across the world. I haven’t used it yet but there is some cute jewelry I have my eye on.

The last items in the box are two food items, That’s It. Bar and Sharkies. My dogs somehow got into my box and eat these. The dog I suspect was the culprit is a real Houdini when comes to getting food that she shouldn’t be able to reach. So I have no idea how these taste. They also ate them before I could even take a picture of the snacks. I got my box before leaving for work and when I got home the snacks were gone.

Now on the October box.

The first thing is the The Can’t Cook Book: Recipes for the Absolutely Terrified! by Jessica Seinfeld. The book contains simple recipes for the person that is scared of the kitchen. As the person that cooks dinner for the family most nights I wasn’t impressed with the book. There wasn’t anything I really wanted to cook in it and I thought the language was a little condescending. Though with cook books I would always recommend going to your public library and checking out the book before buying as a cookbook that doesn’t appeal to me might be perfect for someone else.

The next thing is the NYX Cosmetics liquid liner and Smokey Shadow palette. I didn’t try the liner (or it seems even took a pic, sorry!) because it is a black liner and I was hoping to trade it for a brown liner. Side note but I am so sick of getting black liners in my boxes. Would a brown or a color liner that is not a pencil too much to ask for?!? The Smokey palette was nice but nothing special. Only the brown shadow has decent pigmentation but I guess if the other shadows were nicely pigmented then it wouldn’t be wearable.

The next item is the Gorjana Charity Bali Bead Bracelet. 100% of the proceeds of this bracelet will go to the charity Breast Cancer Connections. I do think this bracelet looks a little craft project-y but I have been wearing it since I got it in honor of my aunt, who is in remission from her breast cancer. Go, aunt!!

The next item is the Julep for Popsugar Duo. The duo comes with a Freedom Polymer top coat and Char nail polish. I already have Char so it was a little disappointing that I didn’t get a new color. Click here to look at a swatch of Char. I already have a Freedom Polymer topcoat. It works like the Seche Vite top coat but not as thick or shiny. It does shrink your polish so the longer you wait to apply after the last coat of nail polish the better. It is nice to have a backup of the topcoat since I am constantly losing the one I already have.

The next item is the Jane Tran bobby pins. Once these are in these stay put and whatever hair in the pins is trapped! The downside is that there are little hard to put in and it pulls hairs and breaks a few strands when taking them out. I like these better then those solid Jane Tran bobby pins as they are a little easier to open and get in our hair.

The next item is The Wet Brush. This is by far my favorite thing in the box and maybe anything that I have ever gotten in a box. I know, big claim to make. This brush is designed to eliminate “tugging, pulling, and ripping.” I was little dubious of the claim but it works! Having curly hair I can only brush when it is wet and I always have knots. This goes through my hair so easily, without any pain or pulling. Seriously love this brush.

The next thing is The Crispery Halloween Crispycake. This is a huge rice crispy treat. These were pretty good, very marshmallowy and much better then the repackaged ones you can get at the grocery store.

The last item in the box is a $20 credit to Stitch Fix Click on the link to get more info (don’t worry that isn’t a referral link). Now if you want one let me know ;). This alway looked like a cool service, a Stitch Fix stylist sends you a box of clothes and accessories for you to try out. If you like something or all the pieces you can buy them at a discount and send the rest back. The major downside to this service is that if you are plus size you can’t use this service, not even for an all accessory box. Being plus size I lied about what size I wear so I can see what the service was like. This site is so busy that I won’t get my box until March!

So that is what I got in my Popsugar boxes the last two months. Popsugar will be raising their prices with the November box by $5, $35 to $40 a month. So I got an year subscription to lock in the current prices. I think if you get a prepaid subscription by the end of the month you will be able to get the lower price. If you want to help me out by using my referral link click here.
